The adoption of biokerosene as aircraft fuel might be closer to becoming reality. Ubrario (Brazilian Union of Biodiesel and Biokerosene) has launched on the last Tuesday (06.19) the Brazilian Platform of Biokerosene, seeking the discussion of a policy of encouraging to the use of biofuel on aviation.
The launch took place in the Hall of Santos Dumont Airport, during Rio +20, with the participation of the organizations who signed the Global Manifest of Aviation Biokerosene.
Fernando Pimentel, Minister of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade said that the platform is a very important initiative for both Brazil and the world. “It is the conclusion of a meeting of the most modern and technologically advanced transport -which is air transportation- with the environment, and even biofuel, which is also what's most advanced in an environmental point of view. This event happening in Brazil, in Rio +20 is very symbolic and reflects what the country hopes for the future”, he stated.
Pimentel also said Brazil has all it takes to provide regular supply, stable and competitively priced product in the world. “With the statement of IATA (Air Transport Association), made, saying that by 2040 aviation around the world will have to use a 50% mixture of biokerosene on flights, Brazil has to be on the front side, and I believe we have a nice future”, he completed.
Juan Diego Ferrés, the president of Ubrario, compared biofuel to other fossil fuels, saying the using of biokerosene might reduce in 80% the greenhouse gases emissions, also mentioning the deal IATA made “This cut represents a decrease of 2% in global emissions of carbon dioxide”, he affirms.
Ferrés also highlights the role of Brazil in biofuel market "Biokerosene is a reality. There is no technological or social barrier anymore to the expansion of the production of biodiesel, since there are plants that don’t compete with food production ".
