Cabo Frio International Airport, in Rio de Janeiro, received on Monday (7.30) a C17 cargo plane from the U.S. Air Force, bringing two Seahawks twin-engine helicopters for the Brazilian Navy, to be used in search operations and rescue.
It is the first time an aircraft of this kind lands in Brazil, and Cabo Frio Airport and was chosen for its technical conditions and location. The assembly of the engine and other parts will be made by the manufacturer, assisted by the navy, and should last two days. Then both will take off to São Pedro da Aldeia Base, also located on the coast of Rio de Janeiro, to put into operation.
"We've had other big aircrafts here, such as Antonov, one of the largest in the world, however, is the first time that Cabo Frio receives U.S. Air Force cargo," says Paula Resende, responsible for press relations the airport complex.
"The activities in Cabo Frio are normal while the cargo is on the complex. We occasionally receive large aircrafts, and we are always available for this kind of movement", adds Paula.
In the first half of 2012, the airport reached a 180% increase in the volume of transported loads and 20% in passenger numbers over the same period last year.
